More specifically the bit is 1 mm in diameter.

Resistor is needed regardless of the process in which you drill. Yes, I know it works without the resistor, but do you really want to chance bricking the drive over a 5 cent resistor and 10 seconds of soldering? Didn't think so.
Also the drill bit included with the template is a bit too large IMO. I use a .5mm bit made by Dremel. I chose that brand because it's hard as hell to dull it out where cheapos are only good for 1 or 2 drives. I've done exactly 209 EF's now with only 1 brick and that 1 was with a 1 mm bit.

so what does the solder and resistor do exactly that its so important?

Drops the resistance of the bond wires as you cut as insurance you don't fry the chip

Why are people so intimidated by this hack? All you need is patience, that's it. It's not hard at all, you just have to take your time. And I will never get tired of pointing out that my girlfriend did it successfully on her first try. Keep in mind she knows nothing about electronics or tools, so everyone in this scene already has an advantage on her. So if she can do it anyone can. So dig deep find your balls and drill a damn chip.
